You’re not the only person who has ever wondered, “How much does a Quantum Computer cost?” With news abounding about quantum innovations and digital behemoths like Google, Amazon, and IBM vying for supremacy in this field, it’s reasonable to question if we’re going to witness a revolution in computing and how much it might cost to be a part of it.

This article will explain the Quantum Computer Price, who can afford them, what factors influence their price, and whether or not you (or anybody outside of a research facility) could actually own or use one.

Quantum Computer Price | The Real Numbers (2026)

Manufacturer Type Estimated Price (USD)
IBM Superconducting, Quantum System Two (1,000+ qubits, e.g. the 1,121-qubit Condor processor) $10 – $25 million (privately quoted per install)
D-Wave Quantum Annealer, Advantage2 (5000+ qubits) ~$20 million (per Florida Atlantic University’s Jan 2026 purchase)
Google Custom (Willow chip, ~105 qubits) Not for sale
Rigetti Novera QPU, on-prem (9 superconducting qubits) ~$900,000

Important Note: These machines are typically sold to governments, universities, and multinational corporations, not private consumers. Qubit counts have grown enormously since the early 2020s (IBM’s flagship chip has gone from 127 qubits in 2021 to 1,000+ today), while smaller entry-level on-prem units like Rigetti’s Novera have actually gotten cheaper — the market has split into “flagship research system” and “smaller lab unit” price tiers rather than one number fitting all.

A cheaper way in: most organizations skip buying hardware entirely and rent time on quantum hardware through the cloud instead — IBM, Google, and Amazon Braket all offer pay-per-use access, typically from a few cents to around a dollar per second of qubit time, which is why cloud access, not ownership, is how the vast majority of real-world quantum computing actually happens today.

Why Are Quantum Computers So Expensive?

It’s not just the qubits that cost money it’s everything around them.

Breakdown of Contributing Factors

  • Cryogenic Cooling: Must be kept near absolute zero

  • Error Correction: Needs complex systems to fix unstable qubits

  • Shielding & Isolation: Sensitive to environmental interference

  • Research & Development: Decades of investment go into each chip

  • Operational Costs: Special facilities, power supply, and trained staff

Conclusion: Should You Care About Quantum Computer Price?

Absolutely. Understanding Quantum computer price isn’t just for billionaires or scientists it’s for anyone who wants to stay ahead in the fast-moving tech world.
