You’re in a group chat with a mix of iPhone and Android friends. The photos come through blurry, nobody’s sure if their message actually sent, and someone’s name shows up in that dreaded green bubble. What Is RCS, Exactly?
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services, and it’s best understood as SMS’s long-overdue replacement rather than a new app. Where SMS could only handle 160 characters of plain text and MMS choked on anything bigger than a low-resolution photo, RCS runs over mobile data or Wi-Fi and supports the features people expect from modern chat apps: typing indicators, read receipts, full-resolution photos and video, and group chats that actually work properly.
